Fishing with "carrelet" in Charente-Maritime

As a region with an outstanding historical, cultural and architectural heritage, it is hardly surprising that Charente-Maritime has become the favorite destination for the French and is in front of Hérault, Var, Vendée and Finistère (see the article of the Figaro of 7th of May 2016)

France is the second destination for a holiday for the British. In 2015, they have booked 170 millions of nights in Nouvelle Aquitaine

Three main towns illustrate the department’s role in economic and military life; La Rochelle which looks out towards America and Canada in particular; Rochefort which grew around the naval base and dockyards and Royan destroyed by allied bombing during the Liberation fighting (September 1944 - April 1945), the martyred city is declared a Laboratory of research on urbanism and has since a representative architectural heritage of the 1950s (Modernist architecture), which earned it to be classified Ville d'Art.

The centuries have shaped the Saintonge identity, a secret and living soul, an alliance of land and sea, it is nourished by Roman art, precious vineyards and elegant chateaux. It is a bright gateway to the ocean, the coast, the islands and estuaries. Beyond local vocations, these two influences are undeniable.

Our village, Villars en Pons, is situated not far from the road of the pilgrims of Compostela, a very picturesque region. In cities as in villages, we find magnificent Romanic churches.
